What to Do in Each Dental Emergency

Now, if you feel like there is something really wrong, such as a dental emergency, you might be liable to panic. However, the first thing that you should do, is not to panic. Often, most dental emergencies are nothing as severe as a medical emergency, and often, it’s the excruciating pain that you might feel until you see your Roseburg dentist that might be driving you crazy more than anything. However, if you do notice that there is something wrong, you should obviously call the dentist to make an emergency appointment, but there are a few things that you can do, and this article will tell you what to do, and what it could mean.

Now, if your face randomly swells up, this could be a serious dental infection and it needs immediately attention. They don’t get better on their own. This can also be an infected tooth or bone or gum infection. Obviously, what you do here is you see the dentist right away. If you delay, you could die from an infection. You should stay upright and don’t lie flat. Also, drink lots of fluids. If you’re dehydrated, this means more complications.

If you have a broken tooth, this means you could need an implant depending on the situation. You might get the tooth reimplanted and you might get it to take. You might need a root canal, but you will still have your own tooth and you won’t need it. However until you get to the dentist, which you should do right away, like within an hour of it happening, pick it up by the crown, which is the part that you bite with. Don’t touch the root, since that could totally screw up the reimplantation. For an adult tooth, try putting it in. You should make sure that you look at the teeth on the other side of the mouth so that they’re mirror images and it’ll help with trying to reimplant so that you don’t do it the wrong way. This might be kind of gross, but you should be able to do this without touching the root. Only do this though if you know what you’re doing so that you don’t make the tooth face the wrong way.

Then if you have a tooth that broke or a crack, you will typically need a filling or a crown. However, if it’s broken all the way though, you might need an implant or an extraction. If a crown breaks in half or falls off, you can wait a few days to get it fixed. The first thing that you should do, is not to panic, since that’ll make it worse. If you’re not in pain, this buys you a lot of time. Often, teeth will break and there isn’t pain. There is a bit of sensitivity at times, which means that the piece that did break was large enough to expose the dentin. The sensitivity will go away as saliva remineralizes the area. Obviously, after that you’ll be able to call the dentist, since they will be able to look at it and give you a consultation in order to tell you what you need to get done. However, you should try to talk to them exactly, saying what exactly broke off. If you can, email them a photo too.

Finally, if you’re bleeding, then it could mean gingivitis, and if you have an extraction where it bleeds, you’ll need immediate care. For this one, do go and see your dentist right away, because it could be a situation where you have gum disease, or go see your oral surgeon if you just had surgery, keeping yourself elevated.

Now, with all of these dental emergencies, it’s obvious that at the end of it, you should go see your Roseburg dentist. But, if you can’t right away for some odd reason, then don’t despair, for that could be a sign that you might have to take it a little step at a time, and instead, immediately fix the situation as best as you could so that when you do go in, the complications are much less because of it.
